I liked the way you tied in all three of the movies to your focusing question. they way yoou compared them to eachother was good. I also liked your conclusion. You didnt just go back and repeat everything you said but you made a point to another movie that is related also to your focusing question.
so does this mean you are against vigilantism? couldn’t figure that out. marvel made a couple series’ of comics about vigilantism. superman, batman, but they also had alter vigilantes. green goblin and so on. i could see how people may want to take things into there own hands, there are tons of things that happen that as a person you can’t just brush off. boondock saints know whats up, the fact that they were successful in killing mob bosses and so forth is awesome. you mentioned cops, the police do the best they can to find out what really happened on a call, but the escalation of an argument is well done and over by the time they get there. it also depends on where you live, ex: shootings are more prevalent in detroit than tacoma, so the mentality of the cops is to punish those who commit the harshest crimes. thus leaving petty domestic violence stuff to the counselors and going further to convict those of murders, serial killers, etc. i guess what i am trying to get at is that unless you see or involved in the dispute first hand you don’t really know what happened. anyways, i liked reading your paper. i can’t think of any constuctive criticism; maybe just read over it again and make sure it sounds like what you are trying to say. this is the type of stuff that is interesting to read! nice work man
First off I want to start by saying I liked your introduction and conclusion. I like how you called movies a type of art for the creator. I too believe that there is art in everyone its just how you choose to show your art is what matters. I too never really look too deep into a movie just kind of watched it and either liked it or didn’t that’s the way it went. Then this class happened, you almost cannot watch a movie the same, it is like when you know how to do something and you watch someone do it wrong, but you know the right way. This is now how I feel about watching movies; I try to find the inner meaning.
You’re introduction was creative. It’s creative because I don’t think anyone would have thought to use something taken from their own realities. Good choice. I think the parts that stuck out the most were (1) when you speak about how kids don’t really read magazines or newspapers, or watch the news, but “the technology age is driving people away from…” I liked that because I agree. Our main thing when we get home now is to check out mail (email) or myspace or facebook or get on google and utube to see the latest. And I’m not a techo intelligence!! (2) I think by using examples from those 3 movies , you explain very well the vigilante and I think those were key points that made your paper strong because I’m sure if people haven’t seen all have seen atleast one. You did get me sidetracked though at the end when you spoke of Erin Brockovich, I wasn’t sure the connection to vigilante (sorry). I do agree that people should/could take a stand, but i do think that people don’t because of their own fears of doing so or what might happen to those close to them. I’m not saying I wouldn’t take a stand, but I’m speaking on those behalfs. Unfortunately, in today’s society, things aren’t as they use to be. Things and people seem more violent to the extent of murder…and sometimes it’s those who witness and are totally innocent get the short end of stick sometimes in most cases than not. But I do like your paper…it was really good and interesting and relatable because, I too, get frustrated when I watch movies or shows that show the witnesses keeping their mouth shut and just letting a crime go “unpunished” and it does make you want to just take care of it yourself (if you know what I mean), You’re right everyone has the quilt or no guilt of feeling that towards criminals. Good paper and very detailed oriented and easy to follow!!!
Great intro, grabbed my attention and can really relate to it. I like your examples and the “eye for an eye” concept you portrayed, especially with your example “The Brave One”. It’s similar to another movie called “Eye for an Eye” and has Ashley Judd in it, where she too has to be brave and avenge her daughter’s death by confronting her murderer. Erin Brockovich was a great movie to and I believe you were trying to show vigilantism in a different more legally acceptable light, am I right? The history you found on this director is amazing, and goes to show that we are creatures obsessed with objects, memories and emotions. He allowed something he witnessed to become an obsession and used it to be creative and create this movie. Personally I’ve never seen it, but now after reading your paper I most definitely want too.
I liked how you used other movies and were able to tie them into you points being made of Boondock Saints. It wasn’t too many movies to include becasue I was still able to follow what you were saying about your movie. I do agree with Phillip though….are you for or against vigilanteism? Or maybe that wasn’t the point of the paper? That’s the only thing I had a hard time following was your own opinion on it. However, you did a good job at adding your opinion to the citations you used. Nice Paper!
First and foremost I should state that this is quite possibly my favorite movie of all time. Maybe it’s the Irish in me but more likely it’s the relation to the fact, as you point out, that people have to see this stuff everyday and we never really are able to do anything about it and we all have that nagging thought… well what if I did? Well written paper I enjoyed reading it and it was a very nice fact to have such similar movies as relatable topics such as the brave one which I’ve seen and dirty harry which I haven’t or just as likely have and don’t recall it. I was thoroughly impressed with the John Locke quote as after first seeing it thought it was a random quote but in the context of your paper it made sense. Only a couple things I noticed on page 3 im not sure but I believe you meant: dubbed “saints” ; instead of dobbed. Also “she comes in counter with.” Did you mean she encountered? not sure on that one. And lastly just an “a” within : by flawed legal system. Great paper man a pleasure to read.
The point of my paper wasn’t to show you my view of vigilantism, although you can’t completly keep yourself out of your work, it was to show that these movies were the directors or writers views on the subject and in watching these films you see the turmoil over these situations and subjects they go through internally, just like many people in the world. I wanted to make a point that by watching movies you just aren’t simply rotting your brain away, but in fact are seeing someones views and opinions on a subject in live, you just have to dig for it sometimes. I did think about the comic movies as well as “Eye for an Eye” but I wanted to keep the movie list down to ensure that you guys could follow the paper easier. As for “Erin Brockovich”, now that Ridingsophie said it, it is kind of like a legal vigilante, but my intention was to give you more examples of films that portray a clear example of the director or writer trying to make a point to the world through his film, instead of just focusing on vigilante films; I didn’t want you to focus too much on vigilante films in your thoughts of movies and how they have an affect on people who watch them. As for Pmauss’ point about “Cops” that is what I was going for, the Cops do everything they can and that isn’t much sometimes without our help, so if we want our neighborhoods to change for the better we need to stop being so relient on the police force doing everything they can without our help and start to throw in our help when they need and ask for it, only when we as a society say we have had enough and give our full cooperation to Law Enforcement will we start to move in the right direction to a better future for our children and their safety.
Thanks for all your comments so far. I will absolutly take them into consideration when revising my paper.
I like the way that you opened with the same phrase that we have heard time after time from our parents as kids. The opening to your main body paragraphs was also pretty good when you tied in the statistics that we have for the newspapers, and tell how more and more people are turning to the web and TV for their news and entertainment. Your conclusion is also very good how you draw on artists and make that comparison between the artists who want you to get one meaning from what they are doing, and then the other artists who are trying to make you use your brain and find out some other meanings that could apply to your life.
What do like about your Paper? I love the way that you introduce your topic. The intro using mom and dad was really affective at bring me into the paper. Then The description Os your shock about how you Pelt about writing the paper made it easy to tie myself into your paper. I love the way that you tied the other movies and TV shows into you Rousing question. Then you developed an argument and a counter argument really well. The descended your point very well making it clear now you self.
i would most likely have to agree with everyone else. You had a very good introduction and conclusion. You can tell by reading your paper that you worked hard on it. It showed how you didnt ramble, and you used details were it made sense. I tend to ramble were i mention one thing than another, than end up going back to what I was talking about before. You didnt do that at all in your paper, and thats what made it so interesting and fun to read. Good job Joe! Keep up the great work!
Is it okay if we comment on it today? I wanted to read it a lot!
