Well Glenn- Excellent paper!! I know when we first started school and this English we were a little unsure as to how we would do… I would say you did great! It is a very well written paper; I like the introduction as it tells a story and you want to know what happens to that poor stag. The paper flows well and is easy to read based on the way it continues to tell the story. I’m not sure what the Illiad is (yes – I probably should know) but maybe you want to put something specific in that paragraph about that battle. I also like the parallel with Hitler in it. In my mind it is unfortunate that these men both had such big egos that they had all of those people killed- yes it is impressive that they were such a strong race but it seems they decided to play God and it wasn’t based on bad acts, rather a weaker race. This was a good movie (I don’t say great only because of the harshness of the Spartans) but your paper was great. Nice job. Ann
Great paper Glenn enjoyed reading it. Was particularly fascinated with the parallels between Hitler’s genocide/the holocaust and the Spartan way of life. Would have never made the connection and you’re absolutely right that we do glorify the Spartans while spitting on Hitler’s name. In fact we even have a soccer club named Sparta because of the way American culture especially I believe admires the resilient nature and pure brutality of the Spartan people. The mythological factor was/is huge in explaining your topic and I believe you did an exemplary job of it. I thought Zues perhaps had two S’s but I may be way off on that. If you have any need to expand perhaps you could refer to Hercules and the human nature and wanting to be god like aspect as it relates to the Spartan mentality of perfection in the war like ways. They seem to personify Ares the god of war in life and death and whatever lurks inbetween. Had fun reading it though I would perhaps use a little less of the exclamation marks even though I get stoked over 300 too!
Well thanks for the interesting comments ,the title is explained a little more in my final draft ,sorry I didn’t get that out there for you in time for this reading .I think I was probably more surprised than anyone regarding the comparisons I found between Hitler and the Spartans .Hitler used the Spartans as an example quite a few times in his writings and towards his own men . Thanks again
ok Im not gonna lie I dont like this movie at all. It made me fall asleep. I have no desire to waist anytime watching war movies that felt like they just drag on and on. But reading your paper made this movie actually sound interesting. If I were someone who has never seen it and just got finished reading your paper I would actually consider renting it. Your paper made the movie sound alive and detailed instead of the way I described it “a drag on.” I could even tell my reading your paper what your focusing question was. You made it very clear. Great job!
